SAT Reading and Writing Practice: How the Module Works and What to Drill
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section contains 54 questions in two 32-minute adaptive modules testing Information & Ideas, Craft & Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions — with Module 1 accuracy determining whether you reach the harder Module 2 that unlocks a full 200–800 section score.
What is the structure of the Reading & Writing section?
The Digital SAT Reading & Writing section has 54 questions split into two modules of 27 questions each, with 32 minutes per module. Unlike the old paper SAT, there is no separate Reading test and Writing & Language test — all passage-based and grammar questions are blended in both modules.
Module 1 is the same for every test-taker. Your accuracy on it determines whether Module 2 is the easier or the harder version. The harder Module 2 path is required to reach the full 200–800 section score.
What question types will you see?
College Board groups Reading & Writing questions into four domains. Information & Ideas covers main idea, supporting details, and evidence-based inferences from single or paired passages. Craft & Structure covers vocabulary in context, text structure, purpose, and cross-text comparisons.
Expression of Ideas covers rhetorical revision — choosing the most effective sentence, transition, or detail. Standard English Conventions (SEC) covers grammar: punctuation, subject-verb agreement, pronoun reference, and modifier placement. SEC questions tend to be the fastest to answer and are heavily represented in Module 1.
- Information & Ideas: central idea, evidence, inferences
- Craft & Structure: vocabulary in context, text purpose, paired-passage comparisons
- Expression of Ideas: transitions, rhetorical effectiveness, sentence revision
- Standard English Conventions: punctuation, agreement, modifiers
How should you approach reading the passages?
Each passage in the Digital SAT is short — typically 50–150 words — and paired with one question. This is different from the old SAT's long multi-question passages. Read the question first, then the passage; you almost never need to hold the full passage in mind to answer the single question attached to it.
For vocabulary-in-context questions, always substitute your answer choice back into the original sentence to confirm it matches the author's intended meaning, not just a dictionary definition of the underlined word.
What is the most effective way to practise Reading & Writing?
Drill SEC questions first because they have the highest return per minute of study time — the rules are finite and learnable. Once SEC is reliable, move to Information & Ideas inference questions, which require the most reading comprehension skill.
Full-length adaptive mocks are essential for pacing. 27 questions in 32 minutes leaves about 71 seconds per question. Students who drill topic-by-topic but never practise timed modules consistently run out of time in Module 1 — which is the worst place to leave questions blank because it routes you to the easier Module 2.
Scoremojo's mock breaks your Reading & Writing score by domain, so you can see whether you are losing points in SEC grammar or in evidence-based inference rather than just knowing your total section score.
Which grammar rules appear most often on Digital SAT?
Comma usage (especially with non-restrictive clauses and introductory elements), colons and semicolons, subject-verb agreement with intervening phrases, and pronoun-antecedent agreement are the most frequently tested SEC rules.
Transition words — distinguishing contrast transitions (however, nonetheless) from elaboration transitions (furthermore, additionally) — appear in both SEC and Expression of Ideas questions and are worth memorising as a set.
- Comma with non-restrictive clause: use commas around information that can be removed
- Colon: what follows must complete or explain what comes before
- Subject-verb agreement: find the real subject, ignore intervening prepositional phrases
- Transition logic: identify whether the relationship is contrast, cause-effect, or elaboration
Frequently asked questions
Is the Digital SAT Reading section harder than the old SAT Reading?
The passages are shorter but the questions can be denser. Many students find the adaptive structure more demanding than the old flat test because a slow Module 1 immediately lowers your scoring ceiling.
How much time do I have per question in Reading & Writing?
About 71 seconds per question (27 questions in 32 minutes). SEC grammar questions typically take 40–60 seconds; inference and evidence questions can take 90–120 seconds, so fast SEC answers buy you time for harder questions later in the module.
Do I need to read the whole passage for every question?
Usually no. Each passage is paired with one question; reading the question first tells you exactly what to look for. For main-idea questions, read the full short passage — for vocabulary-in-context questions, two sentences of context are normally sufficient.
