How to Study for the Digital SAT: A Step-by-Step Plan
To study for the Digital SAT, build a routine around full-length adaptive mocks (98 questions, 2h14m, two sections) and then drill the specific topics where your Module 1 accuracy cost you the harder Module 2 path — that is where most score points are lost.
What is actually on the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT has 98 questions and runs for 2 hours 14 minutes. It is split into two sections: Reading & Writing (54 questions across two 32-minute modules) and Math (44 questions across two 35-minute modules).
Both sections are adaptive by module: everyone takes Module 1, and your accuracy on it determines whether you are routed to an easier or harder Module 2. Only the harder Module 2 path unlocks the full 200–800 section score. Scores are reported on a 400–1600 scale.
The test is taken on the Bluebook app, a calculator (Desmos is built in) is allowed on all Math questions, and there is no penalty for wrong answers.
How should you structure your study plan?
Start with a full-length baseline mock so you know your current score and which modules are costing you points. A mock that actually routes Module 2 on your Module 1 performance is essential — a flat PDF cannot show you whether your weakest moment is in the routing module or the follow-up.
From that baseline, build a weekly rhythm: two to three topic-drill sessions and one full-length timed mock per week. As test day approaches, increase mock frequency and reduce topic isolation work.
- Week 1–2: baseline mock → identify weak topics by section
- Week 3–6: topic drills (algebra, evidence-based reading, grammar) + one mock per week
- Week 7–8: two mocks per week, review only questions you got wrong in Module 1
Why does Module 1 performance matter more than Module 2?
Because Module 1 routes you. A strong Module 1 sends you to the harder Module 2, which is where the high-score questions live. A weak Module 1 sends you to the easier path, which caps how high your section score can go — regardless of how well you do in Module 2.
This means your study time should weight Module 1 topic mastery heavily. Focus on the question types that appear early and often: linear equations in Math, Central Idea in Reading & Writing.
What study resources give you real adaptive practice?
The College Board's Bluebook app includes a handful of official full-length adaptive mocks and is the only way to practise in the exact test-day interface. Use those.
Scoremojo supplements Bluebook with 11 official College Board linear paper-version SAT tests (120 questions, 2h 44m each), with answer keys checked against the released PDFs. These tests do not route Module 2 adaptively. The platform scores instantly and breaks your result down by topic, so you can see whether you are losing points in grammar, algebra, or data analysis rather than just seeing a total score. Try daily sample practice questions first; a monthly per-track subscription covering additional mocks and tracking is available — current prices are on the pricing page.
What common study mistakes should you avoid?
Practising from flat PDFs is the most common mistake. They cannot replicate module routing, so you never learn to pace the routing module correctly or to recognise the difficulty shift in Module 2.
Reviewing only wrong answers in Module 2 while ignoring Module 1 mistakes is equally counterproductive. Wrong answers in Module 1 have an outsized effect on your final score.
- Do not skip timed conditions — pacing inside a module is its own skill
- Do not ignore no-calculator strategies — Desmos is available but slow for simple algebra
- Do not practise every topic equally — use your mistake breakdown to prioritise
Frequently asked questions
How many months should I study for the Digital SAT?
Eight weeks of structured study is a realistic minimum for most students. Students starting below a 1000 baseline often benefit from 12–16 weeks to build foundational algebra and reading skills before mock-heavy prep begins.
Is the Digital SAT easier than the paper SAT?
The Digital SAT is generally considered more time-efficient — fewer questions, shorter overall test — but the adaptive module routing means a slow Module 1 can hurt your ceiling more than it would on a flat paper test.
Can I study for the Digital SAT for free?
Yes. Bluebook (official College Board app) offers free practice, and Scoremojo offers daily sample SAT practice questions with instant feedback — no subscription required to try it.
