Key takeaways
- Egyptian admission treats the American Diploma as a foreign equivalent certificate: eight subjects, a Ministry of Education equivalency and SAT I scores.
- Public universities run through Tansik and code 7437; private and national universities set their own admission on top of the Council's minimums.
- The private/national rules here are from 2025/26. They are not confirmed for 2026/27.
What is the American Diploma?
The American Diploma is a US high-school diploma awarded by an American-curriculum school, with a transcript that covers Grades 9–12. Egyptian universities treat it as a foreign secondary certificate, so it goes through an equivalency step before it can be used in admission. [2025/26 · private/national] [AUC · 24 Sep 2026]
For Egyptian admission the diploma is not judged on its own. The Council of Private and National Universities' rules look at eight subjects on the transcript, the GPA, and SAT I (or its equivalent) scores; AUC, a private university, evaluates the cumulative GPA from Grades 9–12 together with SAT I. [2025/26 · private/national] [AUC · 24 Sep 2026]
Who is the American Diploma for?
It is for students who want an Egyptian university place after an American-curriculum secondary education, whether they studied in Egypt or abroad. [2025/26 · private/national]
How does equivalency work for Egyptian universities?
Equivalency is a two-part check: the school certificate must be recognised, and the student must hold a Ministry of Education certificate saying the American Diploma is equivalent to Thanaweya Amma. [2025/26 · private/national] Not confirmed for 2026/27 — check the university's own page.
The school side is strict. A certificate from a school in Egypt must be accredited by the diploma's US granting body or an international accrediting body, and no Egyptian school certificate or study sequence counts without Ministry of Education approval. [2025/26 · private/national] The 12-year sequence rule is a Supreme Council of Universities decision (7 December 2020), applied on the Council's page. [2025/26 · private/national]
The subject side is where most applications fail. The Council requires eight subjects, each at least one credit, including your faculty's prerequisites. At least four must be taken in Grade 12; up to four may come from Grade 11 and up to two from Grade 10. [2025/26 · private/national]
General science, Arabic, religion, physical education and military science do not count as qualifying or elective subjects unless the rules say otherwise. Students who did not sit Arabic and religion at Thanaweya level must pass supplementary exams before the degree is awarded. [2025/26 · private/national]
The aggregate is not a simple average. The 2025/26 rules give 40% to the eight subjects and 60% to SAT I (or equivalent); if you sit two SAT II science subjects and they total at least 900, a further 15% of that result is added to the aggregate. [2025/26 · private/national] Not confirmed for 2026/27 — check the current Council statement.
SAT I (or equivalent) must be taken within two years of the diploma, and SAT II results taken after the diploma year are not counted. [2025/26 · private/national]
Which tests do Egyptian universities ask for?
For public universities, the Tansik instructions we read are built around SAT I: applicants send SAT scores from their College Board account to code 7437. [2026 · public]
SAT I is the current SAT: two sections, 98 questions, 2 hours 14 minutes. College Board · 2026] Start with the [Digital SAT pages.
For private and national universities, the Council describes SAT I "or its equivalent" with a minimum of 800, plus 900 across two SAT II science subjects. [2025/26 · private/national] Not confirmed for 2026/27 — check the university's own page.
The EST is the other test. The EST organiser says all national Egyptian universities acknowledge the EST, and that reports for Egyptian universities are sent to the Ministry of Education for certification; for private universities it says to check directly. EST · 2026] Registration and dates are on the [EST exam pages.
The EST route into public Tansik is less clear. The Tansik American Diploma page describes only the College Board electronic send to 7437, not an EST upload. If you plan to use EST I for a public university, confirm the route with Tansik first. [2026 · public]
Practical faculties add subject tests: the Council's rules use SAT II science subjects in some cases, and the EST organiser says EST II is required for medicine, engineering and similar faculties. [2025/26 · private/national] [EST · 2026]
How does Tansik work for American Diploma students?
Tansik is the central admission office for Egyptian public universities. American Diploma students apply through its equivalent-certificate track, not the Thanaweya Amma track. [2026 · public]
The portal's four steps: register your data and get a login; pay for the admission guide and equivalent-certificate papers; enter grades and calculate your aggregate; record your preferences. [2026 · public]
Scores come from the test maker. SAT scores must reach code 7437 from a College Board account from 1 July; Tansik says no application is accepted until they arrive. Normal delivery takes 10–15 days, rush 2–5 days. [2026 · public]
Tansik publishes a separate minimum for each faculty. The 2026 American Diploma statement lists one for every faculty, from medicine down; read the current statement, not a screenshot. [2026 · public]
Tansik is for government universities and the higher institutes attached to the Ministry. [2026 · public] Private and national universities run their own admission under the Council's minimums, and you apply directly. [2025/26 · private/national] Not confirmed for 2026/27 — check the university's own page.
The pages we read do not publish this cycle's fee or closing date. Check the portal; do not reuse last year's dates. [Not confirmed for 2026/27]
What does each university sector ask for?
The sector decides who sets the rule and where you check it. [2026 · public]
| Sector | Who sets the rule | What to confirm, and where | Cycle we could confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public universities | Ministry of Higher Education and the Supreme Council of Universities, through Tansik | Your faculty's American Diploma minimum on the Tansik equivalent-certificate portal; that SAT scores reached 7437 | [2026 · public] |
| Private universities | The Council of Private and National Universities sets minimums; each university adds requirements | The Council's current rules, then the university's own page. AUC publishes GPA 2.0, SAT I 950 and SAT Math 560 for some majors | [2025/26 · private/national] + [AUC · 24 Sep 2026]; Not confirmed for 2026/27 |
| National (ahleya) universities | The Council of Private and National Universities | The Council's rules and the university's admission page | [2025/26 · private/national]; Not confirmed for 2026/27 |
| Universities abroad | The destination university | That university's international-admission page; Tansik does not apply | Not an Egyptian rule |
AUC's own page is the private-sector example we checked: a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, a 950 SAT I total, and 560 on SAT Math for engineering, actuarial science, data science and computer science. These are minimums for consideration, not a promise of admission. [AUC · 24 Sep 2026]
What should a Grade 11 or 12 student do each term?
Treat this as a planning timeline, not a Ministry rule: the dates that bind you are the ones published for your cycle. [plan]
Your progress stays in this browser.
What are the common mistakes?
Most failed applications come from last cycle's rule, or a document that never arrived. [2025/26 · private/national]
- Reusing last year's rules. The Council page we read is dated 28 July 2025 and flagged "expired". [2025/26 · private/national]
- Missing the faculty prerequisites in the eight subjects. [2025/26 · private/national]
- Leaving too few subjects for Grade 12: at least four of the eight must be taken there. [2025/26 · private/national]
- Assuming the EST is sent like the SAT. Tansik describes only the College Board send to 7437. [2026 · public]
- Using an unaccredited school, or trusting a screenshot of a cut-off. [2025/26 · private/national] [2026 · public]

Questions students ask
Can American Diploma students enter Egyptian public universities?
Yes, through Tansik's equivalent-certificate track. You need the Ministry of Education equivalency, the eight subjects on the transcript, and SAT scores sent to code 7437. [2026 · public]
Do Egyptian universities prefer SAT or EST?
Public Tansik runs on SAT scores sent to 7437. The EST organiser says national universities acknowledge the EST, but the Tansik page we read does not describe an EST upload, so confirm the route before relying on it. Private universities set their own list. [2026 · public] [EST · 2026]
Is the ACT accepted?
The Council's 2025/26 rules list ACT and EST I beside SAT I as equivalents, and AUC publishes an ACT composite of 20 beside its SAT I minimum. That page is flagged expired and no 2026/27 statement was found, so the current file is unconfirmed: Not confirmed for 2026/27 — ask the admission office in writing.
How many subjects do I need?
Eight, each at least one credit, with at least four taken in Grade 12 and at most two from Grade 10. The eight must include your faculty's prerequisites. [2025/26 · private/national] Not confirmed for 2026/27 — check the university's own page.
What score do I need?
It depends on the sector. The Council's 2025/26 rules set a minimum of 800 on SAT I; AUC publishes 950, and 560 on SAT Math for some majors; Tansik publishes a separate minimum for each public faculty in the 2026 statement. [2025/26 · private/national] [AUC · 24 Sep 2026] [2026 · public]
When do I send my SAT scores?
From 1 July, from your College Board account to code 7437. Normal delivery takes 10–15 days and rush delivery 2–5 days, and Tansik says it will not accept an application until the scores arrive. [2026 · public]
